Deck paint can be either oil-based or acrylic — both are good products. Oil-based paint has the advantage of being slower-drying, which makes outdoor applications simpler. 

The general rule is to apply the same type of paint that’s already on the deck. For example, if the old paint is oil-based, use oil-based paint.
